"The Pearl of Great Price" - One man's journey from TEC to the Orthodox Church

When Mina asked me a couple of weeks ago to speak regarding my journey to Orthodoxy as part of the stewardship campaign, I had to do a bit of thinking as to how one was relevant to the other. But then I realized that it is precisely that journey that for me makes clear what I have to do and what I want to do in terms of stewardship. I am both "cradle" and "convert."

As an infant I was baptized Orthodox in my grandparents' parish in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. This was the era when priests still advised you to go to an Episcopal Church if there wasn't an Orthodox Church in your community. Since we didn't have a Church in our area, I was from that moment raised Episcopalian. I loved the Episcopal Church. There is a profound beauty and dignity in the Episcopal Church's liturgy, music, and historic buildings. The people are warm and committed Christians. From a young age, I served on the altar and continued this throughout my life as an Episcopalian. The youth programs and camps were a central part of my social life, and the childhood friends I today remain close to were all from Church.
