MARK YOUR CALENDARS
In 2011, one of highest of the Episcopal Organization’s high holy days, Earth Day, occurs on April 22. Interestingly enough, another minor religious observance will also be celebrated on the very same day:
This year, Earth Day falls on Good Friday–a profound coincidence. On the day we mark the crucifixion of Christ, let us remember that when Earth is degraded and species go extinct, a part of God’s body experiences a different type of crucifixion, and another way of seeing and experiencing God is diminished.
“God’s body,” Sparky? You are aware that Psalm 19 starts out like this, aren’t you? “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.”
How about Psalm 24? Have you ever read that? That one starts out “The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein. For He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the waters.”
Now unless you’re suggesting that God somehow created Himself, referring to the Earth is a part of “God’s body” is just stupid because…aw, skip it. Explaining theological concepts to an Episcopalian is like teaching arithmetic to a belt sander.
