CANA Council 2011 Concluded
CANA Council 2011 had the highest number of participants of any CANA Council, with over 300 people traveling from across North America and Nigeria to gather at Church of the Epiphany in Herndon, Virginia, for last week's festivities.
Highlights Wednesday included a well-attended morning brunch on senior ministry; over 60 women enjoying a midday British-style tea with Mrs. Angela Minns; and the Chaplains Deanery meeting led by Bishop Derek Jones.
The Rev'd Canon Dr. John Yates, II, opened Council with his keynote, "Why I'm Anglican" on Thursday morning. Plenary briefings were provided by Phil Ashey+ of the American Anglican Council, Craig Cole of Five Talents International, Bob Ragan+ of Regeneration, Steve Brightwell of Church Army, and Dean Justyn Terry of Trinity School for Ministry. Breakout sessions Thursday included Bishop Dave & Mrs. Mary Ellen Bena on Healing Prayer, Bishop-elect Felix Orji on "Moral Leadership in Anglican Congregations", Bishop Martyn Minns on GAFCON and the status of the Anglican Communion, Bishop-elect Julian Dobbs on Anglican 1000, and many sessions on a host of practical ministry issues such as church administration, fundraising, and missions. A confirmation service led by the Society of Saint Athanasius was held Thursday night.
Friday, Council was blessed by the musical and expository ministry of Dr. Richard Allen Farmer who composed a song for Council on the spot at the piano and proceeded to preach on the opening sentences of 1 Peter chapter 1, the theme passage for Council 2011. Breakout session topics included ministering to alcoholics and addicts, prison ministry, the National Fatherhood Initiative, developing excellence in worship leadership, and a session led by Bishops David Anderson and Roger Ames on ministry with the Holy Spirit. Evening Prayer, Friday, was led by the Rev'd Richard Treacy with artist-in-residence the Rev'd Daniel Rice creating alla prima a 4-foot by 4-foot painting on Council's theme of "Now we live with great expectation . . .".
Clergy and voting lay delegates passed two resolutions during Saturday's business session: one creating a new CANA district led by Suffragan Bishop Amos Fagbamiye, and one commending the emergence of the ACNA Diocese of the Mid-Atlantic which includes about 30 congregations who will retain their dual citizenship in the Anglican Communion through CANA. Godson Paul-Nzeh+ of Houston, Texas and Ajibola Fayeshile+ of Myerstown, Pennsylvania were elected to serve on CANA's Executive Committee, replacing retiring members Dokun Adewunmi+ of Hyattsville, Maryland and Sunday Bolarin+ of Indianapolis, Indiana.
The closing ordination was a truly festive event with Archbishop Nicholas Okoh preaching and Bishop Martyn Minns celebrating the Eucharist. Three candidates were ordained to the diaconate: Clinton M. Kandle, IV, Gary R. Pollitt, Aaron David White; and three were priested: the Reverend Andrew W. Burns, the Reverend Marshall E. MacClellan, the Reverend Eric S. Renne, Sr.. The combined choirs of local congregations, directed by Ann Witty of St Margaret's in Woodbridge VA, sang the 20th century piece "The Eyes of All Wait Upon Thee" by Jean Berger, and then a rousing rendition of "I Will Rejoice" by Grayson Brown accompanied the Nigerian-styled thanksgiving ingathering with scores of people of all ages dancing and singing their way through the aisles to offer their gifts during the offertory. Music was led by Epiphany's organist and pianist Jimmy Crawford, Epiphany's praise band known as CrossOver, and vocalist Ms. Zaki Ogoola.
Photos and audio files will be available in the coming weeks.
