War's Effect on British Christianity - excerpt from Peter Hitchens

Peter Hitchens is a British journalist and brother to the well-known atheist, journalist and author Christopher Hitchens. Peter’s book, The Rage Against God (how atheism led me to faith), chronicles his journey through disbelief to committed Christian faith. Peter spent several years in the early 1990’s as a journalist in Moscow and says that his personal experience of socialism in Eastern Europe contributed to returning to the Christian faith that he was taught as a youth in British boarding school.

While reading the book, I was struck by the insight that he describes in the concluding paragraphs of the chapter entitled “Britian’s Pseudo-Religion and the Cult of Winston Churchill”. I’m sure that others, more well-read and learned than me, can connect the dots between the two world-wars of the twentieth century and the rise of liberalism within the Church of England. Peter’s words provide a sobering view of the effect that war has had on the spiritual life of England.
