One wonders what has prompted the Archbishop of Canterbury to take early retirement and take refuge in the calm of a Cambridge cloister?
The attractions of serving as Master of Magdalene College are of course many, and as a former Dean of one Cambridge College, and as a former Oxford professor, nobody could be better suited to the post than Dr Williams, whose stratospheric academic gifts would adorn any institution of higher learning. All will wish him well in this return to a world which is familiar to him and which will profit greatly from his presence.
He has been Archbishop of Canterbury for ten years, a ministry which requires all of the superlatives which can be assembled for any holder of an ancient office dating back to 597AD with such symbolic and practical significance for the Diocese of Canterbury, for the Church of England, and for the Anglican Communion which stretches across the globe.
