It started with Vicky Gene Robinson in 2003 when he was elected the Bishop of New Hampshire. Three years later the Rev. Canon Michael Barlowe, the Very. Rev. Robert Taylor, and the Rev. Bonnie Perry were in a field of seven seeking to become the next Bishop of California. Suffragan Bishop Marc Andres of Alabama pulled ahead of the seven candidates pack to become the eighth Bishop of California.

Immediately following the 2009 Episcopal General Convention Bonnie Perry's name was again thrown in the ring for Bishop of the Minnesota. The next day the Diocese of Los Angeles followed suit by offering up two gay names for suffragan bishop - Mary Glasspool and John Kirkley.
