The Archbishop of Canterbury has fired his PR Director over a Middle East blunder with the London Times describing Welby's visit to the Middle East as "debacle" after he failed to visit Palestinians.
The Archbishop of Canterbury is seeking a new communications director following a string of negative headlines during a recent Middle East visit. This elicited fury from Palestinians after he had ignored invitations to visit Bethlehem or Nazareth during the high profile visit.
An official from the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem complained: "We weren't given any notice of his schedule and were treated like criminals by his staff when we asked if he would like to visit our most holy sites." In response Welby, who uses blogs and Twitter, is looking to recruit a PR advisor to serve him at Lambeth Palace and forestall any such issues from arising in future. Lambeth Palace's current press secretary, Marie Papworth, is shortly due to go on maternity leave.
