What's a skip-over day? It's one of those days when the lectionary of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer skips over some verses of Scripture that don't fit the current pecusa liberal theology. The verses skipped over between today's readings and tommorrow's occur in Romans, chapter 1. Here are the offending verses:
Rom 1:26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature;
Rom 1:27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
Is there any surprise that these two verses are omitted from the lectionary?
A few years ago, a colleague mentioned these verses to his bishop, and the bishop was apparently not familiar with them. My guess is that the bishop's Bible reading was for sermon preparation from the lectionary and otherwise from a Daily Office Book. The Daily Office Book gives the readings for each day's morning and evening prayer services. So, if the extent of one's Bible reading is for sermon prep and daily prayer according to the Daily Office Book, one misses verses like those quoted above.
Friends, do your readings from a Bible, and if you're praying the offices, read the omitted verses. You may be surprised at what pecusa leaves out. Then again, you probably won't be surprised at all.
