I am not a lawyer. I am a priest who has been deposed. I believe that deposition for those who have left pecusa for another province of the Anglican Communion is wrong. To abandon the communion of the church, in my view, ought to be read in the context of the preamble to the pecusa constitution. The preamble states that pecusa is a constituent member of the Anglican Communion. To depose someone because they have transferred to another province of the Anglican Communion is nothing much more than a vindictive act. pecusa is not a communion by themselves, although we have seen pecusa act this way over the last few years. As a constituent member of the Anglican Communion, when one person, whether it is Bishop Robert Duncan or a priest, leaves pecusa for another province they have not abandoned the communion of the Anglican Communion.
We know that pecusa is jealously guarding the United States as their personal domain, but given the unilateral actions of pecusa their claims will not stand. Laypersons, bishops, priests, deacons and congregations are leaving pecusa. pecusa could accept this as a necessary result of their unilateral behavior and act in a Christian manner toward those who do not hold to the ever-changing liberal gospel.
pecusa has decided instead to fight those who want to leave. Unfortunately, we and the world can see that there is little dignity, grace, or Christianity left in pecusa.
