Really smart people are those who lead pecusa, but also those conservatives that remain in pecusa hoping against all hope that pecusa will be reformed. We know that the leadership of pecusa is filled with really smart people because they are so often speaking down to the rest of us common folk. I know a few of the folks who are what we might call the institutional conservatives and they are smart as well.
In the conference reported on in The Living Church article below, the institutional conservatives are hoping, deeply hoping, fingers crossed hoping, that pecusa will take action on the Communion Covenant. It's not going to happen. The Presiding Bishop has already said it won't happen, but our institutional conservatives continue to hope, deeply hope, fingers crossed hope, that somehow, some way, pecusa will sign on to the Covenant. It's not going to happen.
Not only that, at the General Convention in the summer many fully expect that pecusa will usher in all kinds of gay "rights" (blessings, ordinations, marriages, who knows what else). Remember when it was homosexuality, then gays and lesbians, then GLBT, then GLBTI. Now there are even more letters to add as I suggested years ago when I explained the liberal train. So, how many of these new letters representing new "oppressed" groups will win new "rights" at GC09?
I can't answer that one, but I am confident about this: pecusa will not, can not, will never sign on to the Anglican Covenant. But the institutional conservatives will continue to hope, deeply hope...
