Ann Arbor man charged with having sex with two minors

Paul Egan / The Detroit News via Stand Firm:

A church music director was charged today with crossing state lines to have sex with minors.

David Zobel, 32, of Ann Arbor was arrested by the FBI today and charged in federal court in Ohio with performing sex acts with two girls ages 12 and 13, the FBI said in a news release.

Zobel, a former pianist with the University of Michigan Men's Glee Club who is listed on the glee club's Web site as chorus master and music director at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Ypsilanti, could not be reached for comment.

The complaint alleges that Zobel picked up the two girls in Xenia, Ohio, on June 2 and drove them to Toledo, where he engaged in sexual activity with them.

Investigators identified Zobel through his MySpace page and text messages he sent one of the girls, the FBI said in the news release.

The FBI searched Zobel's Ann Arbor home on Tuesday and seized cameras and a laptop, according to court records. Sexually explicit photographs of both girls were also seized, the FBI said.

The FBI in Detroit and Cincinnati and police in Ann Arbor and Toledo assisted in the investigation.

Kelly Cunningham, a spokeswoman for the University of Michigan, said Zobel was a temporary pianist who joined the glee club in September 2005. His contract expired in April, she said.

Officials at the church could not immediately be reached.
