I haven't yet gotten over the election of an out and out liberal to become the next bishop of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina. This diocese is described as being 70% conservative, so how did this guy get elected? Is it the old story of liberals being more politically active? Were the delegates to the electing convention more liberal than those in the pews (this one has to be true)?
Over at The Speculation Site we are told that the result of this election will be a massive decline in attendance and giving and this may be true. However, we have seen over the past six years that many people will not leave as long as they can believe that their parish will remain as it has always been. As long as their parish isn't unduly affected many people choose to avoid any disruption in their lives. So, whether many people vote with their pocketbooks and feet is an open question at this point.
My question at this point is why were the so-called 70% so poorly organized?
