ACE KING SUITED
Interesting news from the Episcopal Diocese of Springfield’s episcopal election where conservative Daniel Martins takes down the pot. Which, of course, immediately raises the $64,000 question: will the Episcopal Organization consent to this election?
On the surface, it would almost have to for one very simple reason. Martins’ election was entirely canonical, Springfield wants him and they want him by a rather wide margin. J. Jon Bruno, for example, couldn’t basically threaten any bishop who vetoed Mary Glasspool with one hand while turning down Martins with the other.
Of course TEO’s liberals might very well cap the guy. And if bishops and standing committees resist the urge to issue statements explaining why they voted the way they did, they could do it rather easily. Not every bishop or standing committee releases such statements and the lack of a paper trail would insulate the Episcopal left from the charge that they’re purging conservatives, even though they are.
At the end of the day, though, I think Martins will be approved. He’s repeatedly said that he’s not going anywhere so refusing to consent because of Martins’ theology would be a needless provocation. While Martins’ election will have no effect whatsoever on the Episcopal Organization’s direction, it will provide TEO the added benefit of pretending a little while longer that conservative Christians are still valued by it.
