A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WORLD MISSION EFFORT OF THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WORLD MISSION EFFORT OF THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH

Here's an overview of the story. As you'll note, the office of Presiding Bishop was a part-time position held by a diocesan Bishop until 1943. Before 1919 the Presiding Bishop was the senior bishop by consecration, reflecting the original modest scope of the office -- to preside at consecrations and preside at the House of Bishops meetings.

The original focus of the Church is reflected in its legal name, the DFMS. The staff at the Church Mission House was mission oriented -- domestic and foreign missions, and there was a LOT of that work done.

The culture changed in the late 1950s. The "corporate model" came to take hold in our culture; think of the huge bureaucracies and regional centers of groups like IBM, universities and colleges etc. The Church erected a proper corporate headquarters, the Presiding Bishop (originally of the House of Bishops) became CEO of the Church. And the word "mission" came to be expanded to include anything they are doing -- today, "mission" includes canonically and legally pursuing parishes, priests, dioceses and bishops.
