from Stand Firm by Greg Griffith The executive director and communications director for Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation were laid off March 1, the advocacy group's president announced.
"Since the global economic downturn, fundraising appeals have become an increasingly difficult challenge for us and other non-profits," John Hammock, president of EGR's board of directors, said in a press release announcing the layoffs of Executive Director the Rev. Devon Anderson, who has served in that role since May 2009, and Director of Communications and Administration Rena Turnham.
Saying that the organization had "a banner year in 2010" in terms of raising awareness about the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and assisting dioceses to engage in "measurable, direct action in global mission," Hammond said, "unfortunately, we simply were not able to do the fundraising needed to sustain our staff and growing programs going forward."
Hammond said that the board "will be entering a time of deep reflection, listening, and prayer in order to discern what the Holy Spirit is calling us to be and do in both the immediate and long-term future."
