UK: Primates' Meeting 'is no Supreme Court'

THE ARCHIBISHOP of Canterbury has defended January's Primates' Meeting against criticisms it downgraded the role of Primates. In his Lent letter Dr Rowan Williams explained that the meeting was more about discussing the role of Primates in an open context than giving them powers "that were greater than their own canons allowed them."
However, a leading member of Gafcon believes that the Archbishop's letter underplays the role of the Primates.
The January Primates' Meeting, which was attended by 23 of the Communion's 38 Provinces, produced a draft agreement that conservatives believe diminished the role of Primates as instruments of unity in Communion. A draft agreement concluded that the Primates' Meeting was a tool to aid dialogue, with the aim of "acknowledging diversity and giving space for difference" within the church.
