SOUTH CAROLINA: Human Beings or Objects on a Chess Board?

The Episcopal Church's tensions with the Diocese of South Carolina grew quantifiably this week, reminding one of the old saying, "If we don't soon change our direction we just might end up where we are headed". A decision by South Carolina's Chancellor Wade Logan to send "Quit Claim Deeds" to all congregations throughout the diocese invited renewed speculation about the diocese's future within the ultra liberal denomination already wracked by numerous lawsuits.

As a resident priest in this diocese this seems a prudent move to counter inappropriate encroachment attempts by the national church.

South Carolina law differs from many states in that it will allow financial gifts as well as church property to remain under the control of individual parishes. This will necessitate that any legal action initiated by the National Church will now be brought against individual congregations rather than an exclusive single lawsuit against the diocese.
