Cathedral in Rhode Island closes

[Ed. Note:  Sad event for Bp. Wolfe who will return by the end of the year and is a terrific bishop. A new bishop will be elected in early June.  Cheryl M. Wetzel]

The Episcopal Cathedral in Providence closed its doors today.  The cathedral is the 4th oldest church in the diocese, built in the 1730’s.

“I’m just hoping and praying that the people here hold onto their faith in spite of losing their building. But faced with financial instability and repairs in the millions, we cannot sustain the congregation,”  according to the Rt. Rev. Geralyn Wolfe, Bishop of Rhode Island.  The chapel has decided to suspend its services for good as of today.  Bishop Wolfe continued, “The building will now be winterized and secured, with all  valuables removed.  “What will happen to it in the future is still up in the air.”

Another member of the congregation commented, “ It’s sad, but it’s also joyous because I am going to start a new life in a new parish. I have left parishes before but this is the hardest.”  Yet another said, ”I love this church, love these people dearly. I’ve been very ill for the past year and they have stood by me.”

Many parishioners who go to the cathedral will now go to Grace Episcopal Church in Providence or other nearby Episcopal churches.
