“If the termites moved out, the whole thing would fall down”

When I was in L.A., the diocese was getting ready to demolish a wooden church on the site where the diocesan center now stands.  Of course a “civic conservancy” group jumped in and bewailed the destruction of the suddenly historic, landmark building and put the diocese through all kinds of hoops to make use of its own property.  One diocesan official, justifiably grumpy about the intrusion and the sheer cost of keeping a disintegrating old building, snarked, “If the termites ever moved out, the whole thing would fall down.”
Now, hear this:  NOTHING in what I am about to write is intended to suggest that LGBT&c. folk are “termites.”  All I am about to say is that The Episcopal Church (TEC) can’t do anything contrary to an LGBT&c activist agenda because, if the LGBT&c activists left, TEC would collapse.  They’re about the only constituency, albeit a dinky one, that TEC really has.

So, we had Matt Kennedy’s earlier post about the Diocese of Texas, essentially publishing 120 pages of “nuance” to say, “Yeah, we will allow same sex ceremonial stuff, because we don’t want the church to be embroiled in fighting.”

But, lo and behold, three TEC Bishops in North Carolina are demanding that their people leap into divisive political fighting on behalf of same sex ceremonial.

Got it?  If you want to stop your diocese from divisive political stuff - bless same sex stuff.

If, on the other hand, you want your people taking sides in divisive political stuff - bless same sex stuff.
TEC is functioning like one of its many (and mostly) small parishes, where the prime directive is “Don’t offend anybody, say no to anybody no matter how outrageous their behavior, and above all don’t hold anybody accountable to Biblical standards, because WE ARE A SMALL CHURCH AND WE CAN’T AFFORD TO LOSE A SINGLE MEMBER!”

Or, as the North Carolina purple shirts put it,
“every time we baptize someone in The Episcopal Church, the entire congregation vows to ‘strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being.’”
Or, as the Dio L.A. guy said way back when, “If the termites moved out, the whole thing would fall down.”
The End.
