Joseph Paul Goebbels PhD Adolf Hitler's Minister of Propaganda observed that small lies are rarely believed, but big lies told often are always believed. The Episcopal Church has become a victim of the big lie theory.
Just a decade ago we were told that if the Gospel of Jesus Christ was replaced with a new faith of tolerance and inclusiveness our ranks would swell. It has not happened. We were assured that if we accepted Jesus as one way to God, but not unique, the world would understand how enlightened we had become and our numbers would increase. They have not. We were informed if we embraced a gospel of affirmation rather than transformation our churches would thrive with hungry and desperate people flocking to our banner. We are still waiting. Regardless of its packaging the lie is always the same. Christianity cannot be remade to suit our personal desires.
Jeffery Lord in his recent article "The Perfect Storm of Liberalism" cites reasons for the numerous scandals plaguing government agencies. It results from decades of obedience to political correctness, addiction to lawsuits, and long abandoned standards of personal behavior. He could be describing the current Episcopal Church.
Our leadership is no longer capable of acting on truth even when it is recognized. Just as conservatism without compassion leads to Pharisaism, liberalism without a moral anchor becomes Nominalism. In the attempt to embrace everything The Episcopal Church finds itself standing for nothing.
