A number of websites, particularly ones associated with labyrinths love to quote Augustine as saying "it is solved by walking." But, did Augustine say that? On a number of sites this afternoon I have posted the following comment:
it-is-solved-by-walking – I have found this attributed to Augustine in a few places, but with no citation. Wikipedia, not the best source admittedly, attributes this saying to Diogenes of Sinope.
This reminds me of another quote that liberals love. It is attributed to Francis of Assisi and I bet a number of you know what it is already. "Preach the gospel and when necessary use words." Did Francis actually say this? I have never seen a citation for this quote either and when I have asked for one I haven't been given one.
So, I ask, do liberals make up quotes?
