Alex Sanders made his case for the inevitability of gay marriage (5/29/12) based on three factors. First, that the Bible's prohibition of homosexuality is nullified because of its justification of slavery. Second, that disapproval of same-sex marriage is like rejecting inter-racial marriage, which we all know is a product of pure prejudice. And, third, that public opinion is moving in favor of same-sex marriage (especially among the younger generation) and therefore we are dealing with an historical inevitability.
There are reasons to question each of these assertions, while ensuring that we not return to the homophobia that still lingers in some quarters of the populace. People of homophile orientation need affection, and deserve respect and equal treatment under the law along with everyone else.
But that is not in itself justification for same-sex marriage that can and should be questioned for a number of purely secular reasons. But, first, let's set the record straight. The Bible did not justify slavery. It regulated, humanized, and ultimately undercut its practice. Secondly, I have yet to meet anyone who rejects interracial marriage on biblical grounds.
