Presbyterian Church USA General Assembly begins June 30

Ed. Note:  The PCUSA  is the second of four mainlines to have a general assembly/general convention this summer.  the United Methodist Church held their triennial meeting in late April.  They held the line on changes to the Book of Order re: new worship services, changes in disciplinary codes,  and changes to the ordination standards.

The Southern Baptist Convention will hold their annual national meeting June 19-20 in New Orleans. They have reported an increase in new starts of churches and an increase in baptisms, but another year of decline in total membership figures.  One of their issues is the contemplation of a name change from Southern Baptists to Great Commission Baptists.  Read more about this at http://www.bpnews.net/BPCollectionNews.asp?ID=197

The Presbyterians changed their ordination standards at their last triennial meeting and have seen a decrease of about 25% in their national membership.  Churches across the country have left the PCUSA and joined “more conservative” jurisdictions.  You can preview their resolution list for their convention at

The Episcopal Church will hold their triennial meeting in early July.  Resolutions filed to date are available athttp://www.generalconvention.org/gc/gc2012-legislation.  Both the Presbyterians and Episcopalians will continue to deal with cultural demands on the Church at these conventions.  We will be at the General Convention and will be posting from there beginning July 4 (Yes, it is in session on July 4!).
