Sandra Fluke Misleads at DNC
Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown University law student turned contraceptive activist, is a rising political star. There’s no doubt about that now. With the Democratic National Convention giving her a prime time speaking slot, President Obama and the Democrat party are clearly doubling down that the HHS mandate will equal women’s votes.
It is sad that Fluke rose to prominence at a Jesuit university, criticizing the fact that the university wouldn’t pay for her contraception. It is sad that Georgetown supported her and even asked her to speak to students.
But sadder still is that Fluke misled people in her nationally televised speech by telling lies that have been proven to be lies by The Cardinal Newman Society and many others.
Fluke said:
Some of you may remember that earlier this year, Republicans shut me out of a hearing on contraception. In fact, on that panel, they didn’t hear from a single woman, even though they were debating an issue that affects nearly every woman.
Lie #1 – It wasn’t a hearing on contraception. It was a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on religious liberty. Fluke demanded to be invited to speak about contraception but that’s not what the hearing was about.
Lie #2 – Fluke said that the panel “didn’t hear from a single woman.”
That is a lie that was born the day of the hearing when Rep. Carolyn Maloney asked “What I want to know is, where are the women?” before storming out of the hearing. Maloney had picked her moment because Dr. Allison Dabbs Garrett, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Oklahoma Christian University and Laura Champion, M.D., the Medical Director of Calvin College Health Services, testified later in the day.
