Prayer Warrior Alert: Conciliation scheduled for Jan 8-9 in Richmond VA

January 4, 2013

Dear Readers,

A call to Prayer Warriors across the United States.
Why:  The Conciliation, to resolve a conflict, under Title IV Disciplinary Canons for:
  • Retired Bishops Peter Beckwith; Ben Benitez; John Howe; Ed Salmon and D. Bruce MacPherson
  • James M. Stanton, Dallas  and Paul Lambert, Suffragan, Dallas;
  • Bill Love, Albany;
  • Daniel Martins, Springfield;
The Charges: These bishops signed an Amicus Curiae submitted either to the Supreme Courts of Illinois or Texas,  supporting the plain interpretation of the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church as authoritative in the structure of the dioceses and national church; reiterating the lack of metropolitical provisions, either in these documents or in oaths of obedience in ordination rituals.

The bishops were notified in late June, 2012, of pending charges signed by the Rt. Rev. Wallace Ohl, Provincial Bishop of Fort Worth and the Rt. Rev. John C. Buchanan, Provincial Bishop of Quincy, and additional clergy and laity from both provincial dioceses. Stating, “…[s]igning an affidavit in opposition to summary judgment made by the Diocese of Quincy and The Episcopal Church in the fall of 2011 to secure diocesan assets from the breakaway group and from the Diocese of Fort Worth ( Bishop Jack Iker), in opposition to the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth and The Episcopal Church (IV.6.Sec 8.)  They each affirmatively and officially acted by injecting themselves, intentionally and without invitation from the bishops exercising jurisdiction, into local litigation, opposing this Church and sister dioceses on core ecclesiastical issues regarding the very identity of other dioceses and obfuscating the polity of this Church regarding its hierarchical character.”

On October 19, 2012, the Disciplinary Panel confirmed that the charges were affirmed.  Instead of being tried for deposition, they would proceed with option (c), Conciliation pursuant to Canon IV.10.
When: The Conciliation will be held at the Roslyn Conference Center, Richmond, VA on January 8 and 9, 2013, with:
  • Conciliator chairman:  Former Federal Prosecutor and Virginia Law School Dean Professor John Douglass,  (Named by Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori)
  • One person from each Standing Committee and Paul Ambos, Diocese of New Jersey (other names unknown at this time)
  • Three bishops, representing the nine:  Bill Love, Dan Martins and James Stanton
    • Three bishops appointed by the Presiding Bishop, who represent the House of Bishops:  Mary Gray-Reeves of El Camino Real, Edward S. Little, II of Northern Indiana, and Michael Milliken of Western Kansas.
    • Advisors to the Complainants and the Respondents (Each bishop and each member of the conciliation team can have an advisor, either spiritual or legal.)
The request: Conciliation is new for disciplinary resolution and clearly the prevailing notion is that these bishops are guilty of disloyalty to the national church.  The requirements for conciliation are unknown; requirements may abridge personal rights guaranteed under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

We will post the results of the conciliation as soon as it is made public, hopefully January 9 or 10.  No press are involved in this.  Neva Rae Fox, Publicist, informed me yesterday that even reporters from Episcopal News Service will not be in attendance, because privacy is required to establish trust.

We ask that you support these bishops with dedicated prayer beginning immediately.

Cheryl M. Wetzel, Dallas, Texas
