The American science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still was considered one of the best movies of 1951. Arthur C. Clark rated it above 2001: A Space Odyssey of which he was a co-writer. An alien visitor to planet Earth emerges from a flying saucer to warn the world that inhabitants of other planets are concerned about the danger the acquisition of atomic weapons poses to their populations and counsels the leaders of the nations to desist from warfare.

In his time on Earth Klaatu, portrayed by Michael Rennie, experiences the day to day violence of "ordinary" human beings and their inability to live peacefully together to such an extent, that he leaves for his home with the threat that if mankind does not resolve to settle its disputes without resort to conflict the governing powers of other world's will see to Earth's destruction. The theme is a common one in cinema and literature. Aliens are thought to be wiser than ourselves and we are dependent upon them to save us from ourselves. Critics and viewers did not escape the conclusion that somewhere the film bore a resemblance to the Christian message, especially when Klaatu adopts the name Mr. Carpenter for the duration of his visit.
