BREAKING: Primate of Kenya and Chair of GAFCON Primates’ Council Publicly Criticises ABC

In the run-up to GAFCON 2 later this year in Nairobi, Archbishop Eliud Wabukala of Kenya has issued the first of a series of monthly messages. This first one has much to digest but these 2 paragraphs are quite stark in their open criticism of current Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby (my emphasis):
While we give thanks for much that has been achieved, especially in the emergence of the Anglican Church of North America and our Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans, we are painfully aware that the Episcopal Church of the United States and the Anglican Church of Canada continue to promote a false gospel and yet both are still received as in good standing by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Furthermore, the Church of England itself, the historic mother church of the Communion, seems to be advancing along the same path. While defending marriage, both the Archbishops of York and Canterbury appeared at the same time to approve of same-sex Civil Partnerships during parliamentary debates on the UK’s ‘gay marriage’ legislation, in contradiction to the historic biblical teaching on human sexuality reaffirmed by the 1998 Lambeth Conference.
I think I’m correct in observing that that’s the first real public criticism of the new ABC by GAFCON and it’s a substantial double-punch, one right after the other. The more I read it, the bigger I realise it is.

Here’s Matt Kennedy’s comment on the Statement:

The Gafcon statement is important for at least two reasons:

1. The Gafcon primates unequivocally categorize any attempt to normalize same sex sexual behavior as a “false gospel”. Those leaders who promote such a move in the church are not merely Christians with whom we disagree. Nor, importantly, are they brothers and sisters with whom we seek to reconcile. They are purveyors of a damning heresy who must repent and recant or be excluded from the Communion. And, thanks be to God, the Gafcon primates have called the Church of England to account for accommodating their presence.

2. The Gafcon primates recognize the recent attempt by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Archbishop of York to make peace with civil partnerships and commend such relationships are valuable to society while holding the line on traditional marriage for what it is…a compromise of Christian truth and an attempt to appease the secularist beast. This despite the desperate attempts of conservative CofE bloggers and leaders to defend it.

As readers of SF know, we have been increasingly astonished over the last year by the number of prominent Anglican conservatives (even in the ACNA) drifting toward ‘reconciliation’ or ‘detente’ with those who promote soul-destroying lies about Jesus and human sexuality and the alarming tendency on the part of these conservatives to categorize the entire debate in terms usually reserved for non-essential disputes about dancing and rated R movies. The Gafcon primates go a long way toward reigning in these misguided and dangerous efforts that will only lead to the promotion of false teachers and teaching and the further enslavement of people struggling with same sex attraction. Thanks be to God.
