DIOCESE OF EASTON: Bishop James J. Shand Announces Resignation
Will not call for Bishop Coadjutor, only Provisional Bishop
Shand says diocese needs a "period of discernment" about its future

The Bishop of Easton James J. Shand has announced he will retire effective July 1, 2014. He has called for a Provisional Bishop instead of a Bishop Coadjutor who would have effectively taken over the diocese as of that date.

In a letter of explanation to the diocesan clergy and Diocesan Council, Bishop Shand wrote, "It is my belief, and the belief of the Standing Committee, that the Diocese of Easton would benefit from a period of discernment, questioning, and self-study before moving into the lengthy process of a search. This could be a chance for us to re-examine the office of Bishop." The Rt. Rev. Clayton F. Matthews, from the House of Bishops Office for Pastoral Development was also present.
