The world loves its own. That is the essential spiritual reason why Oxford University has awarded the persecuting bishop who leads The Episcopal Church in the United States an honorary doctorate of 'Divinity'.
There is no point Confessing Anglicans being bitter about this. We have to understand it theologically.
In John's Gospel, our Lord Jesus Christ warned his disciples whom he was sending out to serve him in a world of sinful humanity in concerted rebellion against its sovereign creator God: 'If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you' (John 15v18-19 - RSV).
