If you thought the only objection to Common Core was the terrible math, think again.  Parents around the country have been fighting for some time to have a book by Toni Morrison, The Bluest Eye, removed from the recommended reading list.   Politichicks had an excellent article last year that may help shed light on why so many parents are opposed to Common Core.  I have seriously debated whether to link this article.  Because there is so much information/misinformation being disseminated on such important issues, I think it is imperative parents read for themselves what your child will be expected to read and study.  The link will follow later in this article if you decide you want to read the excerpts.

You will note in this current article from an Illinois newspaper “opting out” will cause the child’s grades to suffer.
According to Williams, when asked to remove the book from the school’s curriculum, parents were told their children could opt out of the assignment and receive a “D” for the reading.
Other articles on the web make similar assertions and as the Politichicks points out, even if your child opts out, they still associate with those who don’t.

The book is not just sexually explicit.  It is written to gain sympathy for the person committing the acts.
Obviously the reason behind some parents calls for removing the book are the graphic depictions of incest, rape and pedophilia. And not just that, the book actually lets the reader see the depictions from the perpetrators point of view.  In fact, the author of the book, Morrison, says that she wanted the reader to feel as though they are a “co-conspirator” with the rapist. She took pains to make sure she never portrayed the actions as wrong in order to show how everyone has their own problems. She even goes as far as to describe the pedophilia, rape and incest “friendly,” “innocent,” and “tender.” It’s no wonder that this book is in the top 10 list of most contested books in the country.
All that being said and you fully forewarned, I am posting the link to the Politichick’s article which contains excerpts from the book.

PLEASE BE WARNED.  CLICKING ON THE LINK WILL TAKE YOU TO SOME VERY GRAPHIC LANGUAGE THAT IS OFFENSIVE TO ALMOST ALL HUMANS.

Seriously, even if the parts of this book that are not offensive were the best written material on planet earth, is it worth the cost to our children?  Can’t the “moral” of this story wait until adulthood?
