All is Well™: Western Mass. Trying to Unload Diocesan Camp

from Stand Firm by Greg Griffith:

The Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts is exploring the sale or lease of its summer camp in Charlton, saying it does not have the $2 million to $3 million needed to upgrade the facility.

Attendance at Camp Bement fell from 600 in the early 1990s to less than 250 in 2008, according to William H. Coyne, archdeacon of the diocese. The Diocesan Council voted last June to close the camp.

The council and Bishop Gordon P. Scruton approved the hiring of LandVest Inc., of Boston, to examine whether sale, lease or having the diocese hold onto the camp is the best option.

The Alumni of Bement have formed a Nonprofit corp and are working to lease/purchase the camp to reopen it for the children. Although owned by the EC the camp has traditionally run as a nondenominational church camp. Everyone was welcome. There is a lot of misinformation floating around as to why the camp closed that is the past and we are looking prayerfully to the future.
