Secrecy about Washington National Cathedral Damages Continues

In an internal letter sent out this week, Washington National Cathedral management announced that engineers continue to assess the damage incurred by the August 23, 2011, 5.8 magnitude earthquake.

Both parishioners and staff have started to demand complete information about the damages at the Cathedral, but none is forthcoming. Even with continued insistent questioning, secrecy about the true state of the Cathedral continues. Reports sent out by staff immediately following the earthquake asserted that they had seen breaks in the Cathedral wall opening up and closing again.

Within three hours these emails were stopped and the official word put out that damage was minimal. The first obvious damage was the breaking off of a statue of guardian angel as well as tops of Cathedral spires. As an example of initial reports of the damage, NPR reports referred to the damage as "dings" on the building, an assessment that now appears totally false.

The Cathedral hierarchy had pushed to prepare the opening of the building for the 9-11 services which President Obama was scheduled to attend.
