SOUTH CAROLINA: Claims against conservative bishop 'ludicrous'

An Episcopal bishop is being condemned by denomination leaders for taking a biblical stand against homosexuality and abandoning the denomination's "doctrine, discipline, and worship."

Bishop Mark Lawrence is being challenged for distancing the Diocese of South Carolina from the larger denomination, which endorses homosexuality and "gay" ordination. He has been under attack since he first started his work in the southern state. When the Diocese of South Carolina first elected him several years ago, denominational leaders did everything they could to thwart his consent as bishop because of his conservative views.

Under Lawrence's leadership, some churches have distanced themselves from the denomination, which has put him under further scrutiny. But Jeff Walton of The Institute on Religion & Democracy (IRD) says the charges against Lawrence are "ludicrous."
