There is an old joke about a man accused of murder. He testified at his trial that he had gotten into a physical altercation which was initiated by his victim and he was merely defending himself. The pair had a brutal, bloody fist-fight, and the defendant described how he finally gained the upper hand. He said to the prosecutor: "finally, I was whipping him good, and then he went and died on me."
This story resonates with the truth of the current situation in the American Anglo-Episcopal controversy. I have loved ones and beloved brothers and sisters on both sides of the Anglo-Episcopo debacle, and it is all very, very sad. It has indeed escalated to a street fight, and it seems as if one or both of the fighters seems ready to die (If indeed, one is not dead already). Now dying for one's beliefs is a very noble thing, and indeed quite worthy of worship and praise, but forgiveness and love and mercy always trump nobility as the only truly noble things- as life and resurrection always trumps sin and death.
