ANGLICAN DENOUEMENT DRAWS NEARER

Two recent developments may be seen as culminating trends long apparent in The Episcopal Church (TEC). The first, in late June, is the institution of disciplinary proceedings against seven Communion Partners-associated bishops, whereby TEC appears to have set itself on a collision course with them.

The second, in early July, is TEC's 2012 General Convention. The significance of this may lie not so much in its approval of rites for same-sex blessings and authorization of transgendered ordinations as in the dissent of 12 Communion Partners bishops, further deepening the confrontation. But a third development, still in the offing, portends consequences not just for America but for the whole Anglican Communion. This is the choice of the successor to Rowan Williams as Archbishop of Canterbury. It could be determinative of whether the Anglican Communion will have a meaningful unity or whether it will become finally divided between the liberal West and the theologically conservative Global South. The prospects for the former outcome are not bright.
