The Episcopal Church 2012: When Bishops get it Right

Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali the Pakistani born retired Bishop of Rochester in the United Kingdom is known for his leadership and expertise in Christian-Islamic relationships. Speaking to a group of American clergy and laity recently visiting Oxford he reminded them that while he might sometimes get things wrong he would never be untruthful.

His statement reminded me of the backlash from members of our own House of Bishops resulting from several less than positive articles generated by our recent general convention. The two articles which seemed to draw the most attention were Ross Douchat's "New York Times" article "Can Liberal Christianity be Saved" and Jay Akasie's, Wall Street Journal's "What Ail's the Episcopal Church". The criticism from our bishops that each article contains factual errors is correct. It is important that in an information age when once something is written it is virtually impossible to recall every effort must be made to get it right. It is also necessary to evaluate the perspective of the writer because we are all influenced by our experience.
