Jensen jets off for protest talks

From the Sydney Morning Herald:

June 17, 2008

A NEW body mobilising Anglican Church opposition to homosexual clergy and blessings of same-sex unions is likely to emerge from a protest conference of church conservatives in Jordan and Jerusalem that begins this week.

The Archbishop of Sydney, Peter Jensen, who flew out of Sydney yesterday saying that church unity was in "deep trouble", is a key manager of the Global Anglican Future Conference, an eight-day meeting of conservative Anglican leaders disenchanted by the liberal direction of the Anglican Communion.

Dissident Anglicans upset by the US church's 2003 consecration of an openly gay bishop might challenge the authority of the Archbishop of Canterbury, but they are unlikely to step outside the communion to create a rival church or federation.

Dr Jensen was unamused when last week the bishop at the centre of the global battle over homosexuality entered into a civil union with his long-time partner.

It was just another moment, Dr Jensen said, when the proponents of "radical theology" had crossed boundaries. "Well, that's all right. The rest of us must call them back and get on with our business of defending and promoting the Gospel of Jesus."

A new body might emerge from the invitation-only meeting of bishops, clergy and lay leaders this week and bring together members with the same theological convictions, Dr Jensen said.
